The Most-Stolen Vehicle in Each State
It seems like thieves have a preference for certain cars over others. Obviously, the most-stolen vehicles in each state also have much to do with how many of those vehicles are actually sold in that state. You might think that thieves would head straight for the Ferraris, Bentleys, and other pricier cars. But those models aren’t sold in high numbers (because they are so pricey), so you won’t find them on this list compiled by CarInsurance.com.
The cars that are the easiest to steal are typically older models, most often ones that don’t have that pesky car alarm system to alert owners. In fact, the oldest car on this list, comprised of 2017 data, is the 21-year-old 1996 Honda Accord. The honor goes to the state of Pennsylvania. Maybe they happen to drive some of the oldest cars in the nation? The newest model on the list is the 2017 Honda Accord in New York.
Certain states have the same model of car as their most stolen, but the models differ by their production year. Other states have the same exact car as their most stolen, production year and all. For instance, even though Delaware and Hawai’i are about as far apart as you can get, they both see the 2000 Honda Civic as the vehicle with the most insurance claims for being stolen. There are even some surprises on the list! In Wisconsin, the most in-demand car for thieves is a minivan of all things! The 2002 Dodge Caravan is the state’s #1 “hot wheel.”
Alabama

The 2004 Chevrolet Silverado is the most stolen vehicle in Alabama. A truck? In the South? Color us shocked!
Alaska
(image via Facebook)
Alaska’s most-stolen vehicle is the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado. You can’t drive around the Alaskan tundra in anything less than a 4×4, even if you are a car thief.
Arizona

The 2006 Chevrolet Silverado is the most-stolen vehicle in the Grand Canyon State.
Arkansas
(image via Facebook)
The 2000 Chevrolet Silverado is the most-stolen vehicle in Arkansas. So far, Chevy is on a roll as the main target of desire.
California
(image via Facebook)
The first non-Chevy on the list is the 1998 Honda Civic. You’d think Californians would be stealing hybrids, right?
Colorado
(image via Facebook)
Colorado’s most-stolen vehicle, the 2006 Ford F-150, is the newest model of truck on the list. Though, it isn’t the newest overall most-stolen vehicle.
Connecticut
Connecticut and California may be on opposite coasts and vastly different sizes, but they share one thing in common. The 1998 Honda Civic is the most-stolen car in the state.
Delaware
(image via Facebook)
Just a couple states away from Connecticut, Delaware’s most-stolen vehicle is also a Honda Civic. However, the top choice of thieves in this state is the 2000 model.

D.C.’s most-stolen vehicle, the 2013 Honda Accord, is the second-newest of any vehicle on this list, just behind New York’s.

No, Florida’s most-stolen vehicle isn’t a convertible. It’s the 2006 Ford F-150.
Georgia
Just north of Florida’s state line in Georgia, the 2006 Ford F-150 is also beloved by car thieves.

Idaho
(image via Facebook)
In Idaho, the 2001 Ford F-150 takes the top spot. Maybe it’s time for any current owners to trade in for a newer model.
Illinois
(image via Facebook)
That’s right. Illinois’s most-stolen vehicle is a minivan. Honestly, we aren’t quite sure why car thieves love the 2003 Dodge Caravan so much in the Land of Lincoln.
Indiana
(image via Facebook)
Indiana is Ford country, and that makes the 2004 Ford F-150 ripe for the picking.
Iowa
It seems that Alaska and Iowa have more in common than you think. The 2005 Chevrolet Silverado leads both states in insurance claims for being stolen.
Kansas
Among the Great Plains, the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado is the most-stolen vehicle.
Kentucky

Over in the Bluegrass State, the 2005 Ford F-150 takes the crown as the most-stolen vehicle.

Maine
What do Alaska, Iowa, and Main all have in common? Their car thieves have their eyes out for the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado.

(image via Facebook)
Nearby D.C. had the second-newest model as its most-stolen vehicle. Adjacent Maryland continues that trend with the 2010 Honda Accord, the third-newest model on the entire list.

Up in densely populated New England, cars are preferred by car thieves over trucks. That’s what makes the 1997 Honda Accord take the crown in Massachusetts.
Michigan

In the home of General Motors, their 2004 Chevrolet Impala leads the state as the most-stolen vehicle.
Minnesota
Our best would have been on a truck to forge a path through all that Minnesota snow, but the state’s most-stolen vehicle is the compact 1998 Honda Civic.
Mississippi
Back in the Deep South, we find that trucks continue to be the most sought-after vehicles by car thieves. The 2005 Ford F-150 leads the pack in Mississippi.
Missouri
Just a few states north of Mississippi, Missouri also has a Ford truck at the top of its listing. The 2004 Ford F-150 is the most-stolen here.
Montana
(image via Facebook)
The thieves in Big Sky country love a big truck. The 1999 Ford F-150 is Montana’s winner…or loser depending on how you look at it.
Nebraska
(image via Facebook)
We would have thought Kansas and Nebraska would have been more similar. The Cornhusker State’s most-stolen vehicle is a car, however. Not a truck. It’s the 1997 Honda Civic, to be exact.
Nevada
Do you see many 1998 Honda Civics driving around in Vegas? Maybe the rest of the state makes up for it?
New Hampshire
(image via Facebook)
The 2002 Chevrolet Silverado is at the top of the list in New Hampshire, which sits at the top of the East Coast.
New Jersey
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the compact 2000 Honda Civic is the top choice for car thieves in the most densely-populated state in the nation: New Jersey.
New Mexico
The 2006 Chevrolet Silverado is a popular choice among many states. This time, it’s tops in New Mexico.
New York
(image via Facebook)
New York’s 2017 Honda Accord is the newest model on the entire list.
North Carolina
Old Accords and Civics seem to be a popular target. That continues in North Carolina with the 1997 Honda Accord.
North Dakota

South Dakota’s top stolen vehicle was also a Chevy Silverado. Go north of the border, however, and the (single-year newer) 1999 Chevrolet Silverado is the most-thieved.
Ohio
The 2002 Chevrolet Silverado is the most-stolen vehicle in Ohio.
Oklahoma
Oklahoma’s top stolen vehicle is also a Chevrolet Silverado, specifically the 2004 model year.

Tennessee
(image via Facebook)
The 2002 Ford F-150 apparently volunteers to be stolen in Tennessee. See what we did there?
Texas
Did you expect anything less than a Ford truck in the Lone Star State? The 2006 Ford F-150 is the top choice for car thieves. In fact, it’s the most popular model on the list (appearing 6 times)!

West Virginia
The 2002 Ford F-150 is the most-stolen vehicle in coal country.
Wisconsin
(image via Facebook)
Oddly enough, the Dodge Caravan makes not one, but two appearances on the list (the other being Illinois). Wisconsin’s most-stolen vehicle is the 2002 Dodge Caravan (a year older than Illinois’s).
Wyoming
The 2002 Chevrolet Silverado is the most-stolen vehicle in Wyoming. Although, with so few people living in the state, you probably know who stole it.
