2023 Volvo XC40: A Trim Comparison

The Volvo XC40 returns this year almost the same as the previous year but there’s definitely some noticeable reshuffling of features among the vehicle’s various trims. Nevertheless, it still boasts a powerful engine and a luxurious cabin.

Comparing the 2023 Volvo XC40 Trim Levels

With three different trim levels to choose from, there are luxury and safety features for any potential price point. The XC40 has been racking up just as many awards as its larger siblings.

In fact, the XC40 had been named the European Car of the Year, in part, because of its unique interior features. While it may slot into the compact segment, it has the storage capabilities of a much larger vehicle. Some of the most lauded ingenious details include foldout hooks for purses or bags on the glove compartment and in the rear trunk, a removable trash bin in the center console, hidden pullout storage under the front seats, and side door pockets large enough to hold a full-size laptop.

Packages & Options

Before we get into the 2023 Volvo XC40 trim levels, it’s important to talk about the packages offered. These are offered in the very first trim and adding them all will easily hike up the price. But how much?

First off, the Climate Package is easily the cheapest available at $550. This package adds just heated steering wheel and heated seats. A convenience package, for $800, adds proximity keyless entry, a universal garage door opener, and power-adjustable passenger seat. For $1,800, you can get the Driver Assist package with adaptive cruise control, a surround-view parking camera, and lane-centering assist.

Standalone features are available too. Leather upholstery will cost you an additional $1,100. A power liftgate, while a 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system is available for $800. Other options include adaptive and automatic high-bean headlights for another $350.

Core

So what’s actually included with the base Core trim? Actually, it’s a good number of things for the $36,350 MSRP that it costs! The base 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine comes with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, providing 194 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with a front-wheel-drive powertrain. Buyers can upgrade (for an additional $2,000) to the more powerful engine that has 247 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. With that option, they’ll also get an all-wheel-drive powertrain. Interior standard features include a 12.3″ digital driver display, a 9-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control and an eight-speaker audio system. Additionally, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, satellite radio and HD radio are all integrated, Bluetooth and USB ports are standard as well.

As for interior luxury, you get leather upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats and automatic climate control are included.

The exterior features 18″ alloy wheels, aluminum roof rails, and cap-less fuel filling. Instead, a seal opens when a fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closes when it’s removed. There’s no cap to unscrew open or screw back closed. On the safety front, the 2022 Volvo XC40 offers forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist and rear parking sensors, among other things.

Plus

The 2023 Volvo XC40 R-Design is the sport-inspired trim. It starts at $40,750. This trim includes everything in the core model with the added addition of leather upholstery. A passenger-adjustable passenger seat, front parking sensors, proximity keyless entry, a garage door opener and fog lights are among the other standard additions for this trim.
